Bora Bora braids as coined by New Jersey based celebrity hair stylist Omobolanle Ajao are extra volume knotless boho braids that feature multiple curly human hair pieces fed in along the length of the braid to give off a very full look that’s similar to a curly hair wig or sew-in.
Not to be confused with regular boho aka bohemian braids, bora bora braids offer the convenience of a curly wig or sew-in minus the hassle of hiding the lace, getting the leave out to blend or worse even frying it.
Unlike a sew-in where the scalp is “hidden” under tracks of hair, Bora Bora braids allow you to still have access to your scalp making it a breathable and lightweight hairstyle.
Bora Bora braids have received mixed reactions from the masses often being compared to tree braids, micros, & pick and drop braids.
While there are slight similarities, the braiding method that’s used to do Bora bora braids is what sets it apart from the rest.
If you have a vacation lined up, look no further than bora bora knotless braids. This is the perfect water friendly vacation hairstyle for black women.

How long do Bora Bora braids last?
Bora Bora braids will last anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks with two touch ups in between and a strict maintenance routine.
Bora Bora Braids Tutorial
Start by prepping your bulk human hair bundles by putting them on a braiding rack.
On clean, straightened and product free hair, part your hair accordingly to your desired sizes namely small, medium or large.
Apply shine n jam to your parted sections to clean up the parts and tame any flyaways.
With Bora Bora braids, small, smedium or medium sections are more common with small parts giving you the neatest look.
As is the norm in knotless braids, divide your parted section into three parts and feed in the top part of the bulk human hair in between one of the parts. Start plaiting the three parts and then feed in another piece.
It is important to remember to add two pieces of bulk human hair at the root of the braid before you braid up to an inch. The purpose of this is to ensure the density of the hair is similar starting from the top all the way to the bottom.
Continue to braid the hair as you feed in more pieces of the bulk human hair every inch or two in.
As you approach the end of the braid, feed in three pieces of the bulk human hair and braid them all the way down until your natural hair is fully braided in.
Leaving about an inch or two below your natural hair, tie a knot two to three times or use nail glue to secure the braid and ensure it won’t unravel. This is how you make the ends curly.
After you’re done, trim off any uneven ends and style as desired.
PS– Just like the island it’s named after, Bora Bora braids are not cheap. Depending on the length you’re going for and how full you want it to be, this look can set you back $500 to $1000.
This is NOT a low maintenance hairstyle. You will need to dedicatedly perform a specific maintenance routine. Scroll to the bottom of the post for our expert maintenance tips.
Bora Bora Braids Pro Tips
- The more bulk human hair you strategically feed in along the length of the braid, the more voluminous your end result will look.
- Feed in 10 to 15 curly bulk human hair pieces along the length of the braid. The goal is to “cover” the braid/to make sure only the bulk human hair is visible.
- For a very voluminous look, use three to four 100g bundles of bulk human hair. One 100g bundle will typically have two 50g bundles.
- If you don’t want your end result to be too voluminous, use two or two and half 100g bundles of bulk human hair.
- If your hair is dyed and you’re using colored bulk human hair, soak the hair before you use it to avoid any bleeding or color transfer on your white garments. This is more common with colors such as red or burgundy.
- While most stylists use only human hair for Bora Bora braids, you can use very little synthetic pre-stretched braiding hair if you or your client’s hair is short.
