The braided bald head or braided baldie as popularized by Monteria Chisholm aka Tookie Did It has been dubbed the hairstyle of the summer.
The LA based hairstylist explains that while it’s not a new hairstyle, she came up with the viral design when one of her clients wanted something out of the box and not the regular cornrows with a ponytail look.
The braided bald head is a freestyle stitch cornrow style where a single braid is woven continuously throughout the perimeter of the head and interconnected using different designs in different sections. The braid is then crocheted and sewn down to give the illusion of a bald head.
Known for her freestyle braided hair designs prowess, Tookie Did It combines beautiful patterns and designs alike such as flowers, hearts and butterflies to form what’s nothing that’s short of a masterful work of art.
The same intricate patterns used in the braided bald head hairstyle trace back their roots to the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade where cornrows were used by women to weave patterns and routes that were used for escape routes and to deliver secret messages.

How to do the braided bald head
Before we start there’s three things you’ll need; a lot of patience, creativity, and attentiveness.
This is not a style you can breeze through which is where your patience will come in handy.
Given it’s a freestyle design, you can get as creative as you want. There’s no limit to how many patterns and designs you can incorporate.
Last but not least, you’ll need to pay attention when interconnecting the single braid throughout the different sections.
Ready? Set? Let’s go.
Start by deciding where you want your single braid to start. This could be the centre of the head or either side.
You’ll also need to pick a design and decide how many sections you want to have.
Part the hair using a rat tail comb and apply shine n jam to sleek down the divided sections and create neat parts.
For this style, only the client’s hair is used.
Braid the hair from the starting point and continuously weave it through your chosen sections and designs utilizing duck bill hair clips to secure the hair & keep track of every section you’ll pass the braid through.
As mentioned earlier your freestyle design can feature zig zags, flower designs, hearts or butterflies.
After you’re done passing your braid through all the sections and all the hair is braided, crochet it into the final section and sew it down using a thread and needle.
The end result should look like this.
Oil the scalp, apply some mousse, set it and you’re ready to rock your style.
Things to note before getting the braided bald head hairstyle
- This hairstyle is definitely not for everyone. The shape of your head will largely determine whether you end up loving or hating the hairstyle.
- If you have long and thick hair, getting this hairstyle might be a challenge. You may have to pay more since it will take smaller sections and very many twists and turns to utilise all your hair.
- While not necessary, utilizing the stitch braiding method will dramatically change how good the end product looks.
- The smaller the cornrows, the better they’ll look.
- This hairstyle is perfect for summer because you can throw your wig on and off as desired and still have a cute style when it comes off.
