Taking down butterfly locs is easy and can be fast depending on which butterfly locs installation method you used.
If your butterfly locs were installed using the crotchet method where:
- The natural hair is completely braided before installing the locs.
- The natural hair is only braided at the roots up to 3 cm before installing the locs.
- A rubber band was used to secure the hair at the roots.

Butterfly Locs Removal/ Take Down – Method 1
Start by cutting the locs at the base.
After cutting the locs at the base, pull the wrapping hair out until it gets tangled and you can no longer pull it out.
Hold the wrapping hair and start unraveling the loc using your hair from the tangled part.
Slide and pull out the wrapping hair from the root.
To minimize hair loss & breakage, gently pull apart old build up on the hair at the root after taking down your braids before combing it downwards.

Butterfly Locs Removal/Take Down- Method 2
Take a loc and hold it at the root. Look for your braided hair and pull it out from the loc.
Cut the loc using a pair of scissors and pull out the little bit that’s left.
This method is easy, especially if you had colored locs.

Gently pull down the butterfly locs wrapped hair starting at the roots.
After doing this, you should be able to see your braided section. Pull it out from the loc and proceed to cut the loc.
Complete the process by pulling out the loc from the hair.
