Miracle Knots: How to, Best Hair To Use, Maintenance & Takedown

Miracle knots are going viral right now and we’re covering everything you need to know before you get this hairstyle.

Miracle knots are a crochet hairstyle done on natural hair plaits using feather tip crochet hair.

The style was created and popularized by hair creator Alexis Olubolade.

For this hairstyle you’ll need:

  1. Feather tip crochet hair in your preferred curl pattern be it Ocean wave, Water wave, Kinky straight or Burmese curly.
  2. A crochet needle that comes with most hair packs.
  3. Mousse.
  4. Leave in conditioner.

How to do miracle knots: knot method

Start by doing natural hair plaits on clean, stretched, product free hair.

If you’re team braiding gel, use shine n jam to sleek your parts down.

The size of natural hair plaits or braids (if you prefer to call them that) you should do is up to you.

PS: The smaller the plats, the harder a regular sized crochet hair needle will be to work with.

Your natural hair plaits should look something like the below but don’t worry about how perfect they look since they’ll be covered by the crochet human hair anyway.

After you’ve done your plaits, it’s time to start crocheting the feather tip crochet hair in.

You can choose to crochet the hair in first then work on the ends later or start with the ends then crochet the hair in one go.

Hold the crochet hair in one hand, put the crochet needle through the plait and feed the thread part of the crochet hair into the latch hook.

Close the hook, pull it through the plait, remove the hook and pull both pieces of the hair through the thread opening to create a knot.

Repeat this same process throughout as many places across the length of the plait as you desire until you achieve your desired fullness.

How to secure the ends on miracle knots

For the ends, you have one of two options:

  1. Braiding the thread part of the feather tip crochet hair in only.
  2. Or braiding it in then tying a knot multiple times to secure it.

Method 1

For the first one, you’ll want to leave about two inches of your hair out at the end of the plait.

You’ll then take one piece of the feather tip crochet hair and place the thread part in the middle of the end of your plait.

After this, you’ll braid it down until your own hair is completely braided in.

The trick with this one is braiding the hair so far down there’s no chance it’ll unravel.

Method 2

For this second method, you’ll also take one piece of the feather tip crochet hair and place the thread part in the middle of the end of your plait.

You’ll then use only one side of the feather tip crochet hair as you’re braiding the thread part in and braid it down till your hair is no longer visible.

After this, you’ll tie a knot at the end of the braid several times until you feel it’s secure.

How to do miracle knots: no knot method

For the no knot method, you can either braid the hair in like you would with regular boho braids or crochet it in a different way.

For the crochet style in the no knot method, you’ll:

  1. Take the feather tip crochet hair and crochet it by pulling one side in.
  2. Use one side of the crochet hair and crochet it back into the plait.
  3. Repeat step two a couple more inches apart until the thread is covered.

This method ensures the crochet hair is not tugging on your hair and reduces any chance of breakage.

Refer to the no knot crochet method here.

How to takedown miracle knots without causing breakage

So you’ve had your miracle knots in for say a month or maybe even two if you want to stretch it and it’s time to take them down.

Here’s how you take down your miracle knots without causing breakage.

Start by moisturising your hair with leave in conditioner and use hair butter for better slip.

This will make the take down process seamless because dry hair=breakage.

You’ll then use a rattail comb to start undoing the braids.

The crochet pieces will fall off as you’re undoing the braids.

The trick to avoiding breakage if you used the knot method is pulling your own hair out of the loosened crochet knot instead of the other way round.

Miracle knots pro tips and tricks

  1. If you have fine hair, opt for the no knot method of braiding it or crocheting it in.
  2. Do not keep them in for too long especially if you’re using kinky crochet hair.
  3. Do not pull the crochet hair out. Pull your hair out gently instead after loosening the knot.
  4. Do not take down the hair in a rush.
  5. Use your preferred leave in treatment or hair spritz to keep the hair moisturized and hair butter for better slip.
  6. Do not take down dry hair. Always moisturize the hair first before taking it down.
  7. Use high quality human hair for a seamless experience, better wear and manageability.
  8. Always sleep in a silk or satin bonnet.
  9. Finger detangle the hair gently every other day after moisturizing it.
  10. You can opt to do individual braids at the front and back then a regular braid down in the middle to save time.
  11. You’ll need 200g for a full look.
